Start date: 2008. At this very moment of their career, Scotch Ale are exactly how they wish to be: happy and distilled. Recently back from their trip to the States, they taste like an irresistible flavor transplanted into foreign land.
That’s why listening to them gives you the reassuring feeling of a well-known flavor that surprises repeatedly with unexpected pitches and tunes. Melodic solutions can be easily taken in; the sense of rhythm will have you tapping your foot to the groove. The firing music is so palpable that it becomes contagious.
What you don’t expect is an apparently predictable chorus turning into an unexpected take-off towards dizzy rhythms; that kind of whim hiding ironic undertones, highlighted by ALE’s nasal scratching timber; apparently immediate lyrics concealing amused bitterness, with that learned nonchalance making room for lucid detachment, that special extra beyond the music.
Behind an appealing façade, there can be found a deeper and more profound taste just like with things becoming more precious in the course of time. A virtue that modern pop-rock has for some time now forgotten about. Just Scotch Ale, and you don’t know what you’re drinking.
Data di inizio: il 2008. In questo preciso momento della loro biografia, gli Scotch Ale sono esattamente come vorrebbero essere: distillati e felici. Tornati da poco da un viaggio negli Stati Uniti, sono come il trapianto di un genuino gusto di origine controllata in territorio straniero.
Ecco perché ascoltarli provoca quel rassicurante entusiasmo di un sapore conosciuto, ma che sorprende a picchi ripetuti con note inaspettate. Le soluzioni melodiche possono sembrare di accattivante assimilabilità; il senso del ritmo può indurre a ballarli, a condividerne l'energia coinvolgente; il divertimento è così palpabile da diventare contagioso.
Quello che non ti aspetti è come un ritornello all'apparenza prevedibile si trasforma in un inatteso decollo verso ritmi vertiginosi; come il divertimento nasconda secondi livelli di ironia, sottolineati dal graffiante e nasale timbro di ALE. Così i testi, apparentemente immediati, nascondono divertite amarezze, e quella sapiente nonchalance che lascia spazio al lucido distacco. Acquistando, in seconda analisi, un valore ben più che musicale.
Dietro la maschera di forte appeal, si cela quel retrogusto profondo ed amaro delle cose che accrescono di valore nel tempo, un punto di vista che il pop-rock moderno ha, da qualche tempo, dimenticato. Scotch Ale: e non sai cosa bevi.
